In Boston, on Devonshire Street not far from Post Office Square, is a benchmark disk located near the back entrance to a federal building that houses a post office and a courthouse.
The disk is located on the west side of the building, and on the right side (facing the building) of the first step of the stairs that lead to the entrance.
The disk is mounted horizontally and has the following on its face. Along the edge of the disk is "U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Benchmark." Inside of that is the usual text about penalties for disturbing the mark. At the center is a dash surrounded by a circle. Around that, hand embossed, are: "Fed - 2" and "Elev. 20.186"
The mark is in good condition. There are superficial scrapes across the face, some bluish discoloration visible in the lettering, and chipping along the edge, but, the letters appear to be clearly legible.
This mark appears to be not any of the marks described in the NGS datasheet for MY3144, with the designation, "Federal." The description states that the mark and Reference Marks 1, 2, and 3 are on the roof of the building. Thus, this does not appear to be Reference 2 of the mark, "Federal." The link is provided below for reference, but since this mark is not in the description, it is not provided in the datasheet url link field and the PID is not entered in the field, below.
An additional word of caution. The back entrance is usually guarded with a security person. Thus, use common sense in approaching and photographing the mark.
