The chateau was built in Renaissance style by Florian Griesbeck of Griesbach and his son Giovanni in the years 1552 to 1614. Construction of the chateau had three phases. The oldest is the eastern wing (1552 to 1558). Gross chateau building was completed about the early 70 of the 16th century.
Renaissance chateau in Nelahozeves, which stands on a rocky outcropping on the left bank of the Vltava River, has a shape a letter U. The walls are covered with graffiti imitate rustic or ornamental and figural graffiti. Coming to the castle leads from the west through a stone arch bridge.
Nelahozeves chateau was built by Italian architects, who at the time of King Ferdinand I. frequently came to Bohemia. During the Thirty Years War the chateau was seriously damaged. After the war the chateau ceased to serve as an aristocratic residence and was converted into a government building and the civil service.
In the 60 the 19th century there was a partial restoration of the chateau. Larger repairs took place in 1910, when it was restored the graffiti to its original state, arcades and room on the first floor.
Today the castle belongs to the state and here is located a large collection of Spanish Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque painting.
