The original 35 bells arrived in Alfred in 1937 from Antwerp. More bells were added in 1977 to bring the carillon to its current configuration of 47 bells the largest bell weighing 3,850 pounds and the smallest 19 pounds.

Schedule of regular public performances:
When classes are in session, the carillon is played four times a week, and during the summer months at least once a week. The Wingate Memorial Summer Carillon Series brings guest recitalists to perform at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in July.
