Sir Georg Solti holds the record for having won the most (31) Grammy Awards including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
He is best known for having been the conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1969-91.
He was born György Stern in Budapest, Hungary in 1912. The family name was changed to Solti to protect them from antisemitism.
He made his debut conducting at the Budapest Opera on the same day that Hitler annexed Austria. He eventually left Hungary for Switzerland where he continued his career as a pianist. After the War, he was music director of the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich.
Before coming to Chicago, he was the music director for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden.
In Chicago, he conducted 999 performances...and died before his scheduled 1000th performace scheduled for October 1997.
This sculpture of him is by Dame Elisabeth Frink and was originally at the Lincoln Park Conservatory until being moved to this area in 2006.
