Near the center of the 40-acre campus of Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is a pattern of oval sidewalks surrounding a sculpture entitled "Lamp of Learning."
The Sculpture is a depiction of an "Alladin-type" lamp - an elongated, curving oil lamp made of yellow metal rods. Three black gas pipes rise from one end, at different heights. The tallest is topped with a gas lantern. It was not burning during our visit, but it is assumed that is normally burns constantly.
A plaque nestled into the garden on the south side reads:
"Lamp of Learning - Gift of Class of 1961
Designed by class member Thomas R. White
Symbol of the ideals and objectives of Bethany Nazarene College
Learning for development of character for attainment of culture
in dedication to Christ"
The motto and focal point of Southern Nazarene University (formerly Bethany Nazarene College) is Character - Culture - Christ.
