The Hornby Lighthouse was opened in 1858 after 2 tragic shipwrecks which killed a total of 143 people. Strangely, the first light keeper was Henry Johnson, the brother of the only survivor of the 2 wrecks - James Johnson.
Today the lighthouse is still in use by the Sydney Ports Corporation and uses a 12 Volt 55 Watt Quartz Halogen Lamp. The grounds and keepers cottage are maintained by NSW Parks and Wildlife and are part of Sydney Harbour National Park.

Access to the lighthouse is via a walking path from the end of Cliff St, Watsons Bay.
