In downtown Northampton, there is an eclectic store known as Faces. This store carries a wide variety of items, and in the entrance to the store is an Art*O*Mat machine. This Art*O*Mat is generally green in color and has a black sign with white letters, set in a retro 50s font. Gray-stainless trim surrounds the black block and occasional stars dot the green. Also on the face are miniature articles about Art*O*Mats. There are two rows of knobs with a variety of selections - if they are stocked. It took us at least three tries before we found one that displensed an item. Our selection this round was "Bad Boy Pincushions" by Amanda C. Salomon, which happened to have an image of former VP Dick Cheney. This machine was (and still is) listed as 'under maintenance' on the Art*O*Mat official web site, but as of the visit at the end of May, 2011, it was in fine working order. We purchased our coin from the cashier just inside the store. We also explained that we 'collect' Art*O*Mat machine items. The store is located at 175 Main Street in Northampton. Main Street is also Mass. Route 9 along this part. The store started in Amherst in 1971, but the present store in Northampton was opened in 1986. Currently, it is the only store. The full name of the owning entity is "The Faces of Earth, Inc." The store hours are Sun - 11-7, Mon-Wed 10-8, and Thurs-Sat 10-10. Store Web Site: ( visit link)
