This group of thousands of limestone pillars are found in the Pinnacles Desert located in Nambung National Park. The park is located approx 13km SE of the town of Cervantes, Western Australia.
Over thousands of years, seashells have broken down into lime rich sand and wind has blown it into the area forming large dunes. Limestone has then formed under the sand into a large block through a complex process driven by rainfall. The rain then cuts away at the limestone block creating the formations. The formations as they are seen today have only been exposed in the last few hundred years as the sand has blown away. Evidence from aboriginal settlements shows that the last time the surface was exposed was around 6000 years ago.
Today the park hosts around 150,000 vistiors each year and a Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre is open with informative displays regarding the park. The entry fee to the park is $11.
Nambung National Park is 197km from Perth City.
You can drive on an unsealed loop road which runs through the park. We chose to leave the car in the car park and saw the park on foot. Take plenty of water if you choose to walk as days can get very hot in this region.
