Luther is a small town of about 650 residents, about 25 miles east of Oklahoma City, where on April 19, 1995 a homemade bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and 168 persons perished. Two of those persons were Calvin and Peola Battle from Luther.
Near the north end of the main street of Luther, in an open lot where a former building was destroyed, this memorial consists of a pile of granite rocks on which is placed a granite marker about 14 x 20 inches, which reads: "In honor of those who perished in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building." Also tucked into the rocks is a metal sign which reads: "In loving memory of Calvin and Peola Battle."
Memorials to this heinous crime can be found all over the State, particularly in towns near Oklahoma City, where local residents know first-hand the deep loss to their community, this State, and our Nation.
