The station serves the Metra Electric Line and the South Shore Line, which is operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. It serves about 10,000 passengers a day.
Van Buren has four entrances, three at the intersection of Michigan Ave. and Van Buren and one on Jackson Blvd. in Grant Park. In 2001, the city of Paris gave Chicago a replica of an Art Nouveau-style Paris Metro entrance, which adorns one of the entrances at Michigan Avenue.
