Long Description:
Australia's national carrier Qantas has the fortunate reputation of never having had a fatal accident since introducing jet airliners in 1959. Little known however is that (in it's early days), Qantas had numerous crashes between 1927 and 1951.

This site next to the small outback town of Tambo in Queensland, is the location of Qantas's first plane crash in 1927: a de Havilland DH9C with 3 on-board. The flight's route was Charleville, Qld to Cloncurry Qld.

Plaque reads:
"IN MEMORY
THIS IS THE SITE OF THE QANTAS DE HAVILLAND DH9C G-AUED PLANE CRASH.
24TH MARCH 1927
THREE LIVES WERE LOST
IAN DOUGLAS DAVIDSON (27 YEARS) PILOT
WILLIAM ROBERTSON DONALDSON (40)
ARCHIBALD WALLACE NORTH BELL (55)

They flew with courage through clear blue skies,
to their date with death.
Now here they lie in a peaceful grave too young to die. Neil Galway 2001"

Today there is a memorial cairn with plaque set in a field where the accident happened. To access the location, follow the Tambo Heritage Trail from the main street.
