Talbot Hounds were large white dogs bred as hunting hounds. They became extinct at the end of the 18th Century.
Little is known about the exact nature of the dog, but it is believed to have been brought to England in 1066 from France by William the Conqueror. It is also believed that bloodhounds are descended from Talbot Hounds.
The story of the fountain is told on a plaque attached to the base of the plinth supporting the fountain.
