In Northampton, behind the city hall, is a cylindrical building that once was a gasometer. toping the conical roof is a windvane with the word "gas" incorporated into the design. The design is fairly simple with some scrollwork on the fore end of the vane, and a wide tail on the aft end. Below are the north and south cardinal points.
The building is easily visible from a parking lot, accessible from Crafts Avenue. There are plaques on the side identifying that it once was a gasometer. According to a Masachusetts Historical Commission report, the Gasworks (Gasometer) was built in 1856. I have no idea when this weathervane was actually put up, but 1856 is the earliest it could have been hoisted.
