Left from Keystone Heights on State 68 to GOLD HEAD BRANCH STATE PARK, 9 m., at the head of a ravine from which emerges GOLD HEAD BRANCH, a crystal-clear stream rising from a group of springs and flowing over a bed of white sand. A footpath descends the steep slopes to the bottom of the ravine, 65 feet below the highway. The gorge is a natural garden, overspread with wild flowers, shrubs, palms, and other subtropical growth. There is a motor road along the edge of the ravine to the site of a mill dam. In the park are Lake Sheeler and Pebble Lake, both well stocked with fish (black bass, bream, shellcracker, jack, perch). The park contains 1,080 acres. ---Florida - A Guide to the Southernmost State, 1939
When you stop on your way into the park to pay the entry fee, make sure you get your Florida Park Service Passport stamped if you have one. The park is open from 8 a.m. until sundown 365 days a year. The Admission Fee is $5.00 per vehicle (limit 2-8 people per vehicle) and $4.00 for a single occupant vehicle.
This was one of Florida's first State Parks and it was developed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and you can still see signs of the CCC there today. There's lot to do here: hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and picnicking to name a few. It's also a great location for holding a geocaching event and there are several geocaches to search for in the park.
