A small stream flows down a twenty foot slope into the Colonial Pond area in Stanley Park. At the top of this hill some of the water from the stream is diverted through a sluice to operated the overshot water wheel of the picturesque shop mill which sits on the side of the hill.

The Colonial Pond area preserves structures from Westfield's colonial past. In addition to the Old Mill with working water wheel, there is the Old town Meeting House, a rustic covered bridge, carriage shed, and a blacksmith shop.

The mill is constructed of wood, as is the sluice and the ten foot high water wheel. The wall of the mill that faces the pond is covered with field-stone as is the pillar to which the water wheel's axle is attached. The soothing sound of cascading water is meant to enchant visitors.
