The sign consists of a picture of the parish church, surrounded by a dragon. The village newspaper is called The Dragon and is based on an article that appeared in a pamphlet produced in 1669, entitled The Flying Serpent or Strange News out of Essex. The pamphlet describes the sighting of a dragon in Henham over the summer of that year. Modern research indicates that the author of the pamphlet was one William Winstanley, uncle of Henry Winstanley the builder of the Eddystone lighthouse. Winstanley was known as a man of a keen sense of humour, and it is believed that William and Henry perpetrated the hoax in and around the village using a large wood and canvass model of a dragon.
