Giuseppe Garibaldi (July 4, 1807 – June 2, 1882) was an Italian military and political leader. As a member of the Carbonari he had to flee Italy, in 1834, following a failed insurrection. He then went to South America where he fought in Brazil and Uruguay. He returned to Italy, in 1848, and successfully fought for the unification of the country. Thus he became a national hero in America and in Europe.

This enormous monument to Garibaldi occupies a prominent location on the Janiculum Hill overlooking the City of Rome. It by far the largest monument on the Janiculum.
