The Transportation Regiment (RTransp) is a unit that depends on the Department of Transportation and Material from the Logistics Command of the Portuguese Army and is responsible for the logistical support to the army, mainly in the transport sector by means of cars. The unit is based in Lisbon, between Olivais and Portela de Sacavem in the old quarter of Lisbon Artillery Regiment (RALIS).
Histórica Chronology
1902 - integration of the first cars in the Portuguese Army;
1915 - creation of the Automobile of the Portuguese army, integrating two training centers for drivers (in Lisbon and Coimbra);
1916 - fighting against the Germans in northern Mozambique, during the first World War, leading to the first use of motor vehicles in a campaign by the Portuguese army;
1918 - creation of the Car Park absorbing the former military training centers and also integrating the military garage and a Drivers Military Company;
1926 - The Company is transformed into Drivers Battalion;
1937 - Creation of the Portuguese Army Train;
1975 - The Companies are transformed into the Transportation Service Regiment;
1977 - The Regiment is transforme into the Battalion of Transportation;
2006 - Battalion is transformed into the Transport´s Regiment.
