The tragedy of Air India Flight 182

Release Date: June 23, 1985
Flight 182 from Toronto left the Mirabel airport to 22 hours and had to stop in London before leaving for Bombay. But at 3 pm 13 am, off the coast of Ireland, the device disappears from radar screens. Flight 182 explodes over the icy waters of the Atlantic, leaving no chance for 329 passengers, including 278 Canadians. Journalists Andrew and Daniel Normand Lester recall the tragedy that is the largest mass murder in Canadian history, the second largest terrorist attack after September 11, 2001.

Relief immediately organized to recover the bodies. Nineteen boats, planes and helicopters of Ireland, the United States and Britain are involved in this maneuver. One hundred twenty-three bodies were recovered within days. In all, 131 bodies will be found. Another victim is rescued four months later at the same time that aircraft wreckage during a recent search operation conducted by a Canadian ship. One hundred and ninety to seven bodies are missing.

At the other end of the world, in Tokyo, another suitcase containing a bomb exploded at Narita Airport, an hour before the catastrophe of Air India Flight 182. The baggage had just been discharged from the unit 003 of the Canadian Airlines from Vancouver. In fact, the suitcase bomb was scheduled for another flight of Air India Flight 301, which was to link Tokyo-Bangkok before moving to New Delhi. Two cargo handlers were killed. It will take several years of investigation before confirming the link between the two attacks.
