The castle at Bedford is now no more than a mound of earth by the river. I do not believe that eagles have been seen over the town for many years.

The last male of the Beauchamps of Bedford, who held the barony, was killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265 and is said to have borne a shield with an eagle. The town may well have adopted the eagle as a symbol around this time.

There is another Bedford Arms within a few miles although that one is in the neighbouring town of Hitchin (WMAA5H).
