Sometimes the spelling will vary (Gryphon, as in Alice in Wonderland), but the animal is the same. The Griffin is a beast portraying the king of the birds and the king of the jungle so there is no wonder that it is a favourite in heraldry. It would often be worked into the arms of families called Griffin or Griffith. The Griffin is supposed to portray strength and military courage and leadership.

And some mythical beast trivia? Only female griffins have wings!
