The giant bronze is tribute to Outlaw — a 995-kilogram, red and white speckled bull who was only ever riden once in 71 tries by bull riders of the Calgary Stampede and other pro rodeos where Outlaw performed.
The bronze, created by Saskatchewan artist Richard Loffler.
Justin Volz was the only rider to ever stay on Outlaw for eight seconds. He drew him at the Calgary Stampede for the $50,000 bonus round in 2003 and received 93 points for his ride. Outlaw also competed in the Canadian Finals Rodeo and Pro Bull Riding circuits.
The statue of Outlaw is strategically mounted on a pedestal at the corner of 5th Ave. and 2nd St. S.W. so that his entire mass is facing Calgary’s Stock Exchange Tower.
In 2004, Outlaw rang the closing bell — using the bell around his neck — to mark the closing of the New York Stock Exchange, the first animal in the exhange's history to do so.
He died a month later at age seven and was buried at a cemetery for champion rodeo animals near Hanna, 215 kilometres northeast of Calgary.
