Smithsonian Art Inventory Description: "A full-length, standing figure of a soldier from the Spanish-American War. He wears a campaign hat, shirt with sleeves rolled above the elbow, trousers and boots into which the trouser legs are tucked. His arms are lowered and he holds a rifle in his hands, with his proper right hand holding its stock and his proper left hand on the barrel. A canteen rests on his proper right hip and a haversack on the left, with their straps crisscrossing on his chest. He wears an ammunition belt around his waist."

The statue is located in Capitol Park, which is made up of 40 acres of gardens with trees and shrubs from around the world surrounding the California Capitol building. The statue is located behind a fence in heavy vegetation and can only be viewed from its front side.
