In Springfield, at an entrance from Federal Street, is a pair of rod iron gates, allowing access to the Springfield Technical Community College and the National Park Service museum of the old Springfield Armory.
The gates date back to the Springfield Armory, which was the first U.S. Armory in the country. The Armory was established in 1794, but the gate likely did not go near that far back.
The gates are black and each spans half the distance of the entrance. Each gate is generally rectangular. There are barbed spikes at the top. An oval is placed within the rectangle and filled with vertical bars. A pattern suggesting flowers fill in each of the four corners to the oval. At the bottom is a horizontal design with ovals. The gates are attached to stone posts, which are topped with ornate lantern.
