This column with its statue of the Virgin Mary was built after the plague that struck Olomouc during the years 1713-1715. The column was built thanks to the initiative of the master stonemason Wenzl Render (1669-1733), and was funded by the legacy of the county governor, Leopold Antonio Sak from Bohunovice, and the donations of benefactors. There are statues of patron saints against the plague – St. Pauline, St. Barbara, St. Catherine, and St. Rosalia of Lima – on the upper level of the pedestal, and statues of St. Roch, St. Francis Xavier, St. Charles Borromeo, and St. Sebastian on the lower level. Wenzl Render (1669-1733) carried out the stonework; the sculptor Johann Sturmer (1675-1729) created the statues of the Virgin Mary, St. Charles Borromeo, and St. Francis Xavier, and his apprentice Tobias Schütz (around 1695-1724) created the remaining statues. The statue of St. Sebastian was created during repairs to the column after it had been damaged during the bombardment of the city by the Prussians in the year 1758.
