The two main protagonists in the novel, The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes occupy a prominent location at the Cervantes Monument in the Plaza de España, in the heart of Madrid. The statue shows Don Quixote, lance held high, leading the way on his horse, Rocinante, as his squire, Sancho Panza, follows behind on his donkey, Rucío.
