Castle Geyser Cone in Yellowstone National Park. This photo is from the National Archives. It was created by Ansel Adams on January 1, 1941.
Here is an example where things are expected to change. As time goes on the cone of this geyser will showly change shape as new material is deposited by the geyser and older material erodes away.
You have to be patient or lucky to see Castle Geyser erupt. It erupts on an irregular schedule, every 10 to 12 hours; ejecting hot water at first to a height of 90 feet then changing to steam. The National Park Service insists you stay on the trail or use the viewing platform. I'm not sure if Ansel Adams had the same restrictions placed upon him.
