Born as Charles Felix Kauffman, on February 10, 1844, in Strasburg, France. He enlisted as John Chapman at Limerick, Maine, October 5, 1864. This was because his father, F. A. Kauffman, did not want him to join the war. He gave his birthplace as St. John, New Brunswick, he serving has a Private in Company B, 1st Maine Volunteer Heavy Artillery.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Deatonsville (Sailor’s Creek), Virginia on April 6, 1865. His citation reads "capture of flag" and was issued on May 10, 1865. He served in the Union Army until he was discharged on September 11, 1865.
He then joined the United States Navy as a 2nd Class Fireman on board the Steam Propeller "USS Monongahela" from October 24, 1865 until being discharged on July 8, 1868 in New York.
Died September 30, 1905, in San Francisco, California. Buried under his the name Chas F. Kauffman in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma, California.
