In 1922, Mother Mary of the Crown and Sister Mary Hyacinth came to Springfield, MA to petitioned diocese to accept their new community. Bishop O’Leary appointed, twenty-nine year old, Sister Mary Hyacinth as the prioress of the new community. She was then twenty-nine years old. Mother Mary of the Crown later returned to Catonsville, MD.

In October five sisters and a postulate joined the new community. After searching they found a house at 80 Ingersoll Grove in Springfield. On November 9, 1922 the Monastery of the Mother of God became a reality.

As the community grew they acquired the Nye Mansion, at the present Monastery location, in West Springfield. The Sisters moved into the Nye mansion on October 23, 1925. Twenty years later it became apparent that a proper monastic building was needed, as the old Nye mansion was both too small for the number of sisters and physically deteriorating. Plans for a new monastery were drawn and a building project was completed in 1956.

The monastery is a prominent feature, at its hillside location, as you travel along Route 5. The coordinates are at the sign at the beginning of the driveway where you can get a great unobstructed view of the building and property. There is a sign indicating the driveway leading up to the building is a private way. Please respect their right to privacy in their monastery.
