The placard with the piece reads:
"Section of a Mosaic Floor
Roman, from northern Syria or
Lebanon, possible Tyre, 5th century A.D.
Stone and cement
Gift of Mrs. Robert B. Mayer, 1993.345
Although it is here hung on a wall for safety, this
mosaic was once the floor of a house or public
building, the Romans were particularly skilled at
creating pictures out of variously colored stone cubes,
called teserae, set in concrete. The animal being led
by the man is perhaps a giraffe, which Romans living
in Syria might have seen at public games or festivals."
