This large installation honoring Lt. General Harmon was a gist of the Air Force Academy (AFA) Class of 1959, Air Training Officers and the Harmon family. Harmon was the Founder and First Superintendent of the AFA. The Air Force was initially part of the U.S. Army as the Army Signal Corps then the Army Air Corps. On September 18, 1947, the Air Corps were separated from the US Army and made an equal member of the US Armed Forces. (visit link) for more information on the history of the USAF.

Air Force academy was created on April 1, 1954, when then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill establishing the U.S. Air Force Academy. (visit link) for more information on the history of the Air Force Academy .

"Lieutenant General Hubert Reilly Harmon (April 3, 1892 - February 22, 1957), after a distinguished combat career in World War II, was instrumental in developing plans for the establishment of the United States Air Force Academy.
