The church of Anzy-le-Duc, built in the late eleventh and early twelfth century, is one of the most beautiful churches in the Bourgogne du Sud. It is also one of the oldest monasteries in the country, founded in the ninth century by the monks of Saint-Martin d’Autun. The crypt dates from the Carolingian period, and is unique in the Brionnais. The system of vaulting in the nave, the harmony of proportions and the elegance of the octagonal tower confirm the architectural quality. The carved decoration are beautiful to see. The church is dedicated to ‘Notre-Dame de l'Assomption’. In the ‘Brionnais’ about thirty Roman churches were build in the 11th – 13th century and all still in very good shape.
