A working water wheel restored in 1988 from a former mill on the site. It can be put to use for posterity at the flick of a switch it can spin again.
Here in the 16C eleven water wheels were at work. Six of them for grinding corn, two for pumping water and three for fulling mills to clean and treat cloth.
Over the years other industries flourished on this site: rope makers, skinners, tanners, papermakers and candle factories.
One of the last and very successful businesses was J Nicholls & Sons Tobacco & Snuff factory which was established in 1780 and remained on this site until its closure in the late 1950's.
In the early 1960's all the remaining Mill buildings were demolished and replaced by flats standing nearby. This site is all that remains of the old buildings.
Visit Instructions:
Please give the date of your visit and a brief description of your experience and any additional information you may have about the waterwheel, its current condition, etc. We would very much like at least one original photo from your visit, but it is not absolutely necessary.
