Union General Ulysses Simpson Grant ordered Union troops to occupy Smith land early in September 1861. The Livingston County Courthouse was used by Union offiers when Federal forces occupied Smithland as a headquarters building and for other purposes during the ccupation from September 1861 to July 1865. Livingston County courthouse was one of few Western Kentucky courthouses not burned during the Civil War.
