Early residents of Agawam Center were parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church in West Springfield, a journey of about 5 miles. In 1938 masses were held in the nearby Town Hall building. As the population of Agawam grew the need for a Catholic church became evident. The site of the present church was acquired, through the efforts of the Catholic Men's and Women's club, in 1943. The first mass was held on Easter 1946. The church has since been expanded to include a parish center, built in 1971 and the 19 acre St. John's Athletic Field and pavilion across from the church on Leonard Street.
