The Swedish firm of Bofors is famous above all for the seemingly immortal 40mm automatic cannon. The 40mm L/60 was one of the most successful weapons of the Second World War, seeing service in huge numbers in both army and naval versions with many nations. The L/60 was introduced as both a mobile army weapon and a fixed naval gun. The army weapons were all single-barrelled and air-cooled, firing at 100-120 rpm initially, later raised to 120-150 (varying with the gun elevation; the higher the angle, the more work the mechanism had to do to load the cartridge "uphill"). The ammunition was held in clips and fed into frames above the breech; in this case the clips held 4 rounds and the frames 8 rounds. Some of the weapons fitted to ships were virtually identical, but the proper naval versions had water-cooled barrels to enable sustained fire, and they were fitted in multi-gun mountings. Bofors only produced twin mountings, but the USN developed a four-barrel version.
