The Willard Carpenter House is well known for being a stop on the Underground Railroad. It is the first location north of the Ohio River in Indiana that slaves came to for hiding before they could be moved elsewhere.
Willard Carpenter, to whom this house belonged, was a well known philanthropist and businessman. He was responsible for the oldest standing library in the state of Indiana (Willard Library in Evansville, IN). He also was known for wanting to help in the issue of slavery, making his home a stop on the Underground Railroad.
There is a historical marker in the front lawn of what was the Willard Carpenter House (now a PBS television station). It says ..
"Underground Railway Station
This is a site of an Underground Railway Station during the Civil War period. Runaway slaved were secretly hidden until they could be relayed to similar stations further north."
