Long Description:
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1951 (LWS) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARK EAST RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE ORIGINAL STATION MARK WAS A GRANITE POST ABOUT 8 BY 8 INCHES SQUARE WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER OF TOP. AT THE PROPERTY OWNERS REQUEST THE STATION MARK WAS LOWERED. THE ORIGINAL POINT WAS HELD AND A NEW UNDERGROUND AND SURFACE MARK WAS SET BY THIS PARTY. REFERENCE MARK NO 1 AND REFERENCE MARK NO 2 WERE ESTABLISHED IN 1950 ALTHOUGH THE STATION WAS NOT OCCUPIED. AN AZIMUTH MARK WAS ESTABLISHED AT THIS TIME BY THIS PARTY. A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 3 MILES NORTH OF BURTON AND 1-1/2 MILES SOUTH OF EAST CLARIDON ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF A PROMINENT HILL IN AN OPEN FIELD AND ON LAND OWNED BY MR. TOM C. RICHMOND. IT IS ABOUT 1/2 MILE SOUTHWEST OF THE RICHMOND FARM HOUSE, 280 FEET WEST OF THE EAST SIDE OF FIELD, 170 FEET NORTH OF THE SOUTH END OF FIELD AND 140 FEET EAST OF THE WEST SIDE OF FIELD AND WHITE WITNESS POST. THE MARK IS SET 12 INCHES BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE AND THE DISK STAMPED CLARIDON USLS 1877 1951. (NOTES 1C AND 7A) REFERENCE MARK (EAST) IS 288.6 FEET EAST OF THE STATION, 15 FEET NORTH OF AN 18 INCH WILD CHERRY TREE, 5 FEET EAST OF WEST EDGE OF WOODED AREA AND 2 FEET EAST OF FENCE LINE. THE MARK IS A 6 BY 6 INCH SQUARE TOPPED STONE POST PROJECTING ABOUT 18 INCHES WITH THE LETTERING U.S. IN THE TOP. REFERENCE MARK NO 1 IS 172.47 FEET SOUTH OF THE STATION, 28 FEET NORTH OF FENCE LINE. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 8 INCHES AND THE DISK STAMPED CLARIDON NO 1 1950. (NOTE 11B) REFERENCE MARK NO 2 IS 140.51 FEET WEST OF THE STATION, SET IN THE WEST EDGE OF FIELD 2 FEET SOUTH OF WHITE WITNESS POST. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 4 INCHES AND THE DISK STAMPED CLARIDON NO 2 1950. (NOTE 11B) THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 1-1/2 MILES NORTH OF THE STATION, SET ON THE GROUNDS OF THE EAST CLARIDON METHODIST CHURCH. IT IS 15 FEET WEST OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE INTO CHURCH AND 1 FOOT NORTH OF THE WEST END OF SIDEWALK. THE MARK IS SET FLUSH WITH THE GROUND SURFACE AND THE DISK STAMPED CLARIDON USLS 1877 1951. (NOTE 16A). TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 322 AND STATE HIGHWAY NO. 608 IN EAST CLARIDON, GO SOUTH ON STATE HIGHWAY NO. 608 FOR 1.0 MILE TO DRIVEWAY RIGHT INTO FARM YARD, TURN RIGHT INTO DRIVEWAY AND GO WEST PASSING BETWEEN BARNS FOR 0.05 MILE, BEAR LEFT FOR ABOUT 0.05 MILE, BEAR RIGHT AND FOLLOW ROAD WEST BETWEEN TOW FILDS FOR 0.2 MILE TO DITCH, TURN SHARP LEFT AFTER CROSSING DITCH AND GO SOUTH ALONG EAST SIDE OF FIELD FOR 0.1 MILE, TURN RIGHT ALONG SOUTH SIDE OF FIELD AND GO WEST FOR 0.3 MILE TO FENCE GAP IN CORNER OF FIELD, TURN LEFT THROUGH GAP AND FOLLOW FIELD ROAD SOUTH ALONG THE EAST SIDE OF FIELD FOR 0.45 MILE TO TOP OF RIDGE, TURN RIGHT AND GO WEST FOR 280 FEET TO THE STATION AS DESCRIBED. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 322 AND STATE HIGHWAY NO. 608 IN EAST CLARIDON, GO EAST ON U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 322 FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE METHODIST CHURCH ON THE NORTH SIDE AND MARK AS DESCRIBED.
