Kiama and surroundings had a lot of active quarries in the past. Only a few are remaining active nowadays. This one is owned by NSW railways and is used for gaining basalt, also called blue metal. In earlier days most of the basalt was shipped to Sydney for building roads etc, now NSW rail uses it for building their railways. It is unknown when the quarry was opened exactly but it is believed to be around 1880.
The coords are taken at the official entrance of the quarry but there are some good views from cemetary hill as well. Entrance to the quarry is not possible neither is there a visitorscenter
Type of Stone/Ore mined: Basalt
