The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by the Della Scala, the Lords of Verona, as defensive works, and has been used for military purposes for much of its life. The castle was restored in 1964.

The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by the Della Scala, the Lords of Verona, as defensive works, and has been used for military purposes for much of its life. The castle was restored in 1964, and today also houses the Civic Fine Arts Collection.
There is no charge for access to the castle courtyard itself. However, there is a charge for access to the Civic Fine Arts Collection, if you wish to enter the museum. Currently €6.
The castle is built next to the river Adige and defends the Ponte Scaligero bridge over the river.
