An old stone milepost with a replica distance plaque. The slate information panel in front of the stone gives the following information;
The Milestone was installed on this site to
commemorate the year 2000.
It was recovered from the A428, about
300 yards towards Northampton from the
East Haddon cross-roads, just over the brow
of Tire Hill.
In 1738 the Northampton-Rugby main road
(now the A428) was made a Turnpike with
a Toll House and Toll Bar. All Turnpikes had
milestones at one mile intervals - approximately!
There were 3 within the Parish of East Haddon
and one just outside. Another one can still be
found close to the Ravensthorpe turning. The
Toll was discontinued on 1st December 1870.
The metal plaque is a replica, as the original
disappeared in the 1990s. It was duplicated
using a photograph supplied by Jock and Ann
Cooper, who did much for our village and were
authorities on its history.
This stone is dedicated to their memory.
