The plaque on this artillery piece reads:
"This 36 inch mortar, weighing 42 tons, certainly the largest ever built in this country, was designed by Robert Mallet in 1854. In 1854 during tests, this mortar fired a 2359lb shell to a range of 2759 yds. A total of nineteen shells was fired but never in war."
