This weathervane is fitted atop the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, London. Due to firing of cannons, in days gone by, a method of displaying the wind direction was needed that could be seen from a distance. This was solved by the weathervane driving a gear chain to a clock face display. The twelve'o'clock position was for north and six'o'clock for south.

The photograph shows a bird sitting on the arrowhead of the vane. As this type of bird is about 12 inches long the weathervane is probably in the region of four feet in length.

The weathervane is painted gold with the tail of the sail split to give more stability.

NOTE: The weathervane is on MoD property and cannot be approached for a close-up view. The position given is for a viewing point, outside MoD property, that is open from dawn to dusk.
