The EC-47’s mission was to locate enemy forces on the ground through Airborne Radar Direction Finding (ARDF) targeted against their communications. When their ARDF locational data had a tight circular error probability (CEP), the crews would call the enemy’s location into the Airborne Battlefield and Command Center (ABCCC) and sometimes to ground forces in Laos. The theory was that the enemy communicator was close to his commander and, in turn close to the enemy forces he was supporting. It was always the hope of the ARDF crews that their location information was sufficiently good that the ABCCC would send a Forward Air Controller (FAC) to the location, look around, find enemy, and call in air strikes to destroy that enemy. This memorial is located in the Memorial Garden of the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright - Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio, on the outskirts of Dayton, Ohio. There are over 250 memorials located in the memorial garden. A map of memorial locations can be obtained at the information desk of the museum. With over 350 aircraft on display this is the largest aviation museum in the United States.
