This Shiras Moose sign is located along a foot path in Bear River State Park, along the bank of the beautiful river. Unfortunately we did not see any on this trip. The sign reads as follows:

The moose is the largest member of the deer family. The Shiras Moose is the species found in this part of the Rocky Mountains. Moose are often seen along the Bear River. They eat the abundant willows and other vegetation that grows along the river. The moose may appear awkward, but it is well adapted to its environment. The long legs allow the moose to step over downed logs and cross streams. The legs are positioned so that when a step is taken each leg is raised straight up making it easier to move in deep water or snow. About 80 percent of the moose's diet is wood, mostly twigs and branches. In summer it also feeds on submerged vegetation, sometimes sinking completely below the surface of a lake to get the succulent aquatics.

A healthy bull moose can weigh 1200 pounds and stand seven feet tall at the shoulder. Their color varies from black to shades of brown and white "stockings" on their feet. After an eight month gestation a cow moose will have one to three calves in May or June.

The conspicuous dewlap or "bell" hanging from the throat of both male and female is a secondary sexual characteristic. A notable feature of the bull moose are the huge palmate antlers. They begin growing in April. By August the velvet is shed and the rut begins.
