Located near the displays of stained glass windows in the Navy Pier's festival Hall, this bell is displayed without explanation.
An internet search reveals that an Indiana-class battleship replica was built and displayed at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. There had been a real U.S.S. Illinois laid down in 1864---but it was never completed. In 1898, an Illinois-class battleship WAS built and known as U.S.S. Illinois. See (
