The visitor centre is near the entrance to the longest, deepest and highest canal in Britain. It took 17 years to build by hand and is 3.2 miles long. To get to it from here you will walk past Marsden railway station and then along the canal.

There is some limited disabled car parking at the visitor centre itself.

Sometimes a small boat runs between the railway station and the visitor centre but relies on volunteers to be present.

At the visitor centre there is a cafe and an information centre giving the history of the canal and tunnel.

It is also possible to have a boat ride in a glass top boat into the very narrow tunnel, only a few inches wider than the boat. On a few weekends in the summer boat trips can be taken right through the tunnel.

I haven’t been through the tunnel, but the 1/2 hour short trip is definitely an interesting experience. It's unbelievable that such a long tunnel could be built by hand with only candles for illumination.

The tunnel took 17 years to build and was completed in 1811.
