community performances were presented
until 1928. The upstairs auditorium seated

The lovely old building, known as the Perkins Block, housing the opera house was built in 1890. The opera house was located on the second floor and the largest stage in Florida at the turn of the century. Shortly after the turn of the century, however, the railroads were re-routed and no longer passed through Monticello, which ultimately resulted in the demise of the opera house. In the 1970s, the building was revitalized and is now once again known for its exceptional performances.
