This waymark is for a cast iron tablet, 3’8" x 3’4", with raised inscription painted in a contrasting color and mounted on fluted cast iron post. All 4’4" H. Tablets casts by Calvin Gilbert. The inscription on the 3.8' x 3.4' tablet narrates the events associated with Battery during the Battle. The monument was erected in 1910 by the Gettysburg National Military Park Commission and located on Oak Hill, northwest of Peace Memorial and then North side of North Confederate Aveune, near Peace Memorial. The tablet was removed for maintenance in 2008 and restored in the winter of 2009. The text reads:

Two 10 pounder Parrotts and two Napoleons
July 1 Soon after arriving here it opened an enfilading fire on the Union forces near the Chambersburg Pike causing some to seek shelter in the railroad cuts. Their guns replied slowly but not without inflicting some losses on the Battery in its exposed position. Later in the day it moved to the foot of this ridge to aid Doles's Brigade in repelling the Eleventh Corps and rendering effective service. When the fight ended by the withdrawal of the First Corps it pursued the Union forces to the edge of the town.
July 2 In position but was not engaged.
July 3 The Parrott guns on Seminiary Ridge near the railroad cut took part in the cannonade preceding Longstreet's assault.
July 4 After nightfall began the march to Hagerstown.
Losses Killed 4. Wounded 7. Ammunition expended 572 rounds.
.P. Carter's Company, Virginia Light Artillery (Confederate) was formed in the spring of 1861 with men raised in King William County. The battery served in T.H. Carter's, R.C.M. Page's, and W.E. Cutshaw's Battalion of Artillery. It surrendered with 1 officer and 22 men. Captains Thomas H. Carter and William P. Carter were its commanders.
There are scores of similar monuments for the various Confederate States & Union brigades which fought at Gettysburg. Many of the tablets were created by Albert Russell & Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts (this one, too) and is made of granite, bronze and concrete. All of these tablets were designed by architect E.B. Cope. He designed pretty much every tablet for both the Union and Confederate armies, each one distinct, with several different varieties. The monuments were erected just after the turn of the century during the first and beginning of the second decade of the 20th century. Everyone has since been preserved or restored at least twice since the turn of the 21st century.
