This former jail is now part of a Museum at the History Center at Courthouse Square.
The jail abutted the sheriff's office and was just behind the Courthouse.
Today all that remains is the wooden floor with two rebuilt cells to demonstrat how the cells were built in a circular pattern.
Although the courthouse was built in 1839, the same architect, Gilbert B. Avery, designed the jail which was built in 1870.
The jail had two floors with sixteen cells on the first floor and eight on the second. The center space was occupied by a pump to permit prisoners to bathe.
The jail was left vacant in 1894 when the County Seat moved to St. Joseph. It was demolished in 1916.
